This is a book that has been bouncing around in my head for a couple of years now. In my years of teaching Bible study at the Lake County Juvenile Detention Center, I would frequently get questions about different aspects of the Christian life and not always have the time available to answer them properly. Being a detention center, there is frequent turnover and I often see young people only once or twice. For a few years now I've wished I had something to give them to help answer the questions. 

 Grace Changes Everything is that book. I had a list of 9-10 topics that I wanted to cover, but just couldn't figure out a way to make it all flow without sounding like a textbook. Then, one Sunday in church, I heard the statement, "Grace changes everything," and immediately said to myself - "There's the 'hook'!"

That was worked into a lesson which was expanded into nine lessons over the summer of 2025. I have watched God's grace impact countless lives over 19 years of teaching at detention center. I have experienced His grace impact my life. I pray that God will use this humble offering to impact many more lives for eternity.

It seems as though it is a never ending parade of people's lives being torn apart by violence. But at the same time, it seems as though we have become a culture desensitized to violence and cowed into complacency.

Not By Works

 

"Just as our good works can't save us, our good works also cannot keep us saved. Our salvation is not achieved by good works nor is it sustained by them." 

"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost." Titus 3:5

If It Was Up to Me

In Grace Changes Everything, I begin each chapter with a short quote. The quote tends to be relevant to the topic of the chapter and helps to set the stage for what is to come in the chapter. It is a habit I picked up from a teacher I have worked with, and while I'm not trying to copy someone else's style, I do like the effect it has.

One of the quotes is from a song by Ben Fuller. Ben has quite the testimony. At 16, he had been living a life of depravity and attempted to take his own life, even to the point of having the gun barrel in his mouth. But as he states, "God wouldn't let me pull the trigger." 

Ben moved to Nashville--as so many do--to break into the country music scene. He continued to struggle, and one day he met a couple who were from Vermont, where he had grown up. They invited him to church, and because of the Vermont connection, he accepted.

Excited to announce the title for my upcoming book:

“Grace Changes Everything”

This book is based off a series by the same name that I have taught at the juvenile detention center. From the introduction:

“Grace changes everything. It is a simple yet profound statement. I have seen the truth of it borne out over and over again throughout my life - from my own personal growth in God’s grace, to seeing grace impact the lives of countless young people at my county’s juvenile detention center.

 

Grace is what can take a life that has been torn apart by the darkness of this sinful world, and put it back together, piece by piece. Grace is what can redeem the past of someone who has committed horrible acts and bring them into a right relationship with God.

 

Grace is what secures our future and gives us an eternal home in Heaven. Grace is what can drive the change in our everyday lives and impact our relationships and interactions with others.

 

Without God’s grace, we are helpless and hopeless. Fortunately, He knew what we needed and stepped into our world to die on a cross, pay our sin debt, and show us His grace.”
